Meeting people
Meeting new people is one of the first situations you'll encounter. German has distinct formal and informal registers, and choosing the right one matters. When in doubt, start formal (Sie) — you can always switch to informal (du) if invited.
Formal introduction
This is the pattern for professional settings, meeting someone older, or any situation where you're uncertain. Notice the use of "Sie" (formal you) and titles (Herr/Frau):
